But you have the anointing that comes from the Holy One, and you all have knowledge. I write to you not because you do not know the truth but because you do, and because every lie is alien to the truth.
This is New Year’s Eve day. Our first reading speaks of the antichrist, and many of them – those who are in opposition to Christ. They are those who lie and are alien to the truth.
There are many antichrists, and we should not be one of their number. When we lie, we desert Christ. Lying may seem harmless to some, but lies are the tinder for fire and destruction, especially of our relationships with those around us – certainly those within our families.
The antichrist is not the devil or Satan. Everyone is capable of wearing that mantle. We recognize them by their deceit and darkness. Our Gospel provides the antidote to antichrists:
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came to be through him, and without him nothing came to be. What came to be through him was life, and this life was the light of the human race; the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
Throughout 2019 let’s be truth-tellers and not allow liars to invade our space or darken our thinking.
