Hands Of Time

I am the LORD. “You shall not act dishonestly in rendering judgment. Show neither partiality to the weak nor deference to the mighty, but judge your fellow men justly. You shall not go about spreading slander among your kin; nor shall you stand by idly when your neighbor’s life is at stake. I am the LORD.  “You shall not bear hatred for your brother in your heart. Though you may have to reprove him, do not incur sin because of him. Take no revenge and cherish no grudge against your fellow countrymen. You shall love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD.” (Leviticus 19:1-2, 11-18)

Our first reading speaks of love and not bearing hatred in our hearts.  It reminds me of a Perry Como song: “The Hands of Time.”  He sings of living in the moment and stopping time to enjoy those lovely moments in our lives.

If the hands of time were warmed in our hands, meaning we’d not dwell on past mistakes and future problems, we’d remember who we loved, now love, and should love, including our neighbor and the weak.  We’d also remember those we slandered and for whom we held grudges.   It’s needed quiet time to think, warm our hands, and remember when love first touched us.

If the hands of time
Were hands that I could hold,
I'd keep them warm and in my hands
They'd not turn cold.

Hand in hand we'd choose
The moments that should last.
The lovely moments that
Should have no future and no past.

The summer from the top of the swing,
The comfort in the sound of a lullaby,
The innocence of leaves in the spring,
But most of all the moment
When love first touched me!

All the happy days
Would never learn to fly,
Until the hands of time
Would choose to wave Goodbye.

For those of us who have lost loved ones, Perry sings to us.
