M & M Sisters

Jesus entered a village where a woman whose name was Martha welcomed him. She had a sister named Mary who sat beside the Lord at his feet listening to him speak. Martha, burdened with much serving, came to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving? Tell her to help me.”

The Lord said to her in reply, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her.” (Luke 10:38-42)

I must admit that I sympathize with Martha.  Burdened with much serving, how is Martha to drop everything and sit at the Lord’s feet.  Her sister, Mary, seems a little starry-eyed and leaves her sister to do all the serving.

Perhaps the message for us, delivered cleverly by Luke, is we all tend to be anxious and worried about many things.  Our better choice is to slow down, pray, and take comfort in the fact that Jesus is always with us and tells us to sit at his feet, hear his words, and be calm.

Stress will kill us.  The remedy is the peace that Jesus gives us and the love that abounds when we follow him.  Peace be with you always.
