God's Silence ~ Msgr. Daniel Hoye

For the rest of the week we will be reading from the Book of Job for the first reading.  I'm not sure why, but they start in the middle of the book with Job cursing the day that he was born.  You have to go back earlier in the book to understand that God was boasting about how wonderful Job was and the devil says well let me have him for awhile and we will see how good he is because you've given him all these blessings.  One by one, everything is taken away from Job as he undergoes this test.

One commentator wrote that the teacher is mostly silent during the test.  If you go back to your school days and see yourself sitting at the desk as the test is being taken and the teacher just sitting up at the front.  Or I had teachers who would walk around to see what you were writing.  But the teacher was often silent. Maybe that's the image that we see in the Book of Job; God is silent when Job is undergoing the test.

Is the same true in our lives?
