Computer News

This week I made the move to Apple and bought a MacBook Pro.  When I leave Christ the King in five weeks I need to have access to my own computer.   Thanks to Chris Hughes, all of my files from the office computer are now on the new computer.  I think he said there were 24,000 files moved.  I was just glad I did not have to physically move 24,000 files myself.  Just one of the advantages of  the computer age. I did not count them but I have homilies dating to the late 1980s on file.  That's a lot of talking!  There are also files on holy week services, parish finances, parish programs we have had, personal correspondence, etc. etc. When I was in the seminary and even in graduate school there were no such things as computers.  Memory typewriters were just being introduced.  Some (many?) of the readers of this post probably don't even remember them. When I was writing my thesis in grad school I recall that if the director wanted one thing changed, even a foot note, almo

ECHO

Last night Christ the King hosted the end of the year mass for ECHO, a retreat experience for teens, Encountering Christ in Others.   The program is 46 years old and has been offering teens this program several times a year.   Mary Fuller from Bourne was there.  She has been involved with ECHO from the beginning.  Thank you, Mary for all you have done and continue to do for our youth. I think an important component of ECHO is the opportunity for those who experienced the retreat to participate in "reunions" every week at Christ the King, Our Lady of Victory and at the newly established location of Pius X.  It was mentioned last evening that Dave and Cheryl Ryan have been coordinating the reunions at CTK for seventeen years.  Amazing!  Thank you. If you know of a teen or if you are a teen yourself, go on line and get more information.  Maybe next year is the time to become part of the ECHO family.  You won't regret it. Monsignor Hoye

Packing

In about five weeks I will finish my time as Pastor of Christ the King in Mashpee.  For the last several weeks I have taken time to pack. But I have not really been packing as much as giving away and throwing away so much accumulated "stuff".  I have shed lots of books, sweaters, pictures and other things. When I moved here ten years ago I thought I had divested myself of many things but somehow there is a lot I still have.  And it doesn't help to be the only one living in a fairly large rectory.  Things spread out.  I am amazed at how many closets and bureaus I filled. As I tried to organize pictures and files, I found myself sitting down and looking at them.   My ordination pictures, first Mass program and homilies, photos of family and friends who are no longer with us. If I don't get more disciplined I will still be here when Father Healey comes to replace me.  I promised Father Healey that I intend to be moved by June 15 so he can have a couple of weeks t

Daily Mass

This week, I have been the lector at Daily Mass.  It has given me the opportunity to have a “vantage point” that I normally only have on weekends – to see out at the congregation.  Here at Christ the King, we really are blessed with such a large Daily Mass crowd.  I find it very moving, uplifting, and a strong sense of community when I see this.  I think having music as part of our Daily Mass celebration also enhances  the liturgy! I always enjoy making Daily Mass a part of my daily routine.  During the summer, it gets me up early, out of the house, and provides structure to my day.  On the days that I work, it always sends me to work with a smile on my face, and it keeps me rooted throughout the day.  Homilies are often a brief thought for the day—something to ponder on as we go about our day. The Word of God really contains a variety of lessons for us that can relate to our daily lives, and my attendance at Daily Mass has helped me to realize that. This summer, if your schedule

The Spirit at Work: Accomplishments & Changes

This past Saturday, I returned back to the Cape for the summer.  It is hard to believe that my junior year is over – a year that went so well and so fast.  While I very much miss the people at Saint Joe’s, I look forward to these next three months on the Cape – it truly is a piece of heaven here. With this past weekend coinciding with Pentecost, I thought of the Holy Spirit being at work in each and every one of us.  The truth is, it’s the Spirit’s work that allows us to make these accomplishments.  I don’t know where I would be without the gift of the Holy Spirit in my life. On Sunday, at the 10:30 Mass, we celebrated “Hail and Farewell” for our altar servers heading off to college in the fall, and those who will be beginning their senior year soon.  I remember when I was in their shoes, some three years ago, heading off to college.  While I was sad to see my time come to an end, I knew that is wasn’t really “over.”  I have been able to be involved as an altar server at school,

Saturday Homily - No Babbling

One day in the Garden of Eden, Eve called out to God.  “Lord, I have a problem.”  “What’s the problem Eve?”  “Lord, I know you created me and all of this beautiful garden, all of these amazing animals and that hilarious snake, but I’m just not happy.”  “Why is that Eve?” came the reply from above.   “Lord, I’m lonely, and I’m sick to death of apples.”  “Well Eve, in that case I have a solution.  I shall create a man for you.”  “What’s a man Lord?”  “Man will be a flawed creature with many wretched traits.  All in all he’ll give you a hard time.  But, he’ll be bigger, stronger, and will like to hunt and kill things. He will be witless and enjoy childish things like fighting and kicking a ball about.  He won’t be too smart; he’ll also need your advice to think properly.   “Sounds wonderful,” said Eve.   “But what’s the catch, Lord?”  And God replied, “Man will be proud, arrogant, and self-admiring…So you’ll have to let him believe that I made him first. Just remember, it’s

Testifying to the Lord

As we continue to read from the Farewell Discourse, we hear Jesus saying to His disciples, “The Spirit will come; the Advocate will come, to testify to the truth.  And you too, will testify.” Testifying comes with words, or that sometimes is the case.  But, testifying through actions, would be taking example through Lydia in the first reading from Acts.  She welcomed the disciples into her home, and it was because of her hospitality that they would begin to be able to preach the message. As we hear this in sacred readings today, perhaps we can be attentive to the testimony that we can give.  How we can be attentive to the needs of the other, and by doing that, we are testifying to the Lord.
