Entertaining Angels

Today’s reading from Hebrews begins with one of the best pieces of advice ever given:  “Let brotherly love continue.  Do not neglect hospitality, for through it some have unknowingly entertained angels.”

Another gem is: “Be mindful of prisoners as if sharing their imprisonment, and of the ill-treated as of yourselves, for you also are in the body.”

This advice is especially worth mentioning because in two months the Permanent Diaconate’s Aspirancy Program begins anew in New Bedford when twice a week until the end of May many men believing they have been “called” to be a deacon will gather to be “introduced to a deeper knowledge of theology, of spirituality, and of the ministry of the deacon.”

Of great importance, these men’s wives will attend and hear from deacon’s wives who will share the ups and the downs of this ministry from their perspective.  It’s no bed of roses for some and perhaps many wives who must “lose” their husbands to this demanding, volunteer job.  This especially is a concern for men with young families.   Balancing family, job, and ministry is no easy task.

So, to any CTK men who will attend and participate in the program and to those who still have time to express interest, remember that expressions of brotherly love as a permanent deacon are admirable and needed.  Yet, that love cannot superceed or short-change your wives who you knowingly entertain as angels.   Any man who thinks otherwise should not apply.  Brotherly love is not a substitute for husbandly love.
