Break Chains

From Galatians we hear: “For freedom Christ set us free; so stand firm and do not submit again to the yoke of slavery.”

What makes us free?    We live in a wonderful country that puts a premium on freedom.  We are free to be what we want; to say what we think; and to fear no dictator or demagogue.  We are free to make choices – be they for good or evil.

We believe Christ set us free from evil, although many choose the yoke of slavery to sin and evil.  We have free will, and sometimes we will ourselves to the darkness that exists in all of us that struggles to get the upper hand over our better angels.

Addiction is another yoke and enslaves us.   For those of us addicted to alcohol, opiates, drugs or sex, or any other slave master, the chains bind us tight.    For many we break free, at least temporarily.   The challenge is for us to stand firm and not submit again.   Here’s where we turn to Christ to keep us free.    His is the hand we take to hold us up to prevent a fall.  We still may fall, but his hand is ever there.  Our task is to reach out and hold on tight.
